A variety of intracranial EEG recording techniques using depth electrodes, subdural strip electrodes or subdural grid electrodes are available for further delineating the epileptogenic region for surgery when noninvasive tests are inconclusive. Fortunately, these procedures are rarely necessary today because of the great recent advances in video-EEG monitoring and neuroimaging. Intracranial recordings, however, can make successful surgical therapy a reality for selected patients who are not considered to be surgical candidates on the basis of noninvasive evaluation.
